Regional Medical Center of San Jose Receives American College of Surgeons Trauma Center Verification

Issue: July 2010

Celebrating its fifth anniversary as a County-designated Trauma Center, Regional Medical Center of San Jose has received American College of Surgeons (ACoS) renewed verification as a Level II Trauma Center. Regional receives injured patients from Santa Clara County and many surrounding counties, including the Central Valley and Monterey Bay areas.

Regional is the only northern California trauma center with an air ambulance helipad certified to receive Blackhawk-type rescue helicopters.  This allows Regional to receive injured or severely ill patients from as far as 500 miles at sea.

CEO Mike Johnson said, “This isn’t about a building.  This is about an integrated team of specialized physicians and clinical staff fully committed to providing the best possible trauma care for people who are injured in our community.  There are people at home with their families and back at work because this trauma center saved their lives and prevented disability.”

Established by the ACoS in 1987, the Committee on Trauma Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the pre-hospital phase through the rehabilitation process.

In California, designation of trauma centers is a County function.  ACoS verification involves on-site review of key program and quality processes and indicators that substantiate the hospital delivers comprehensive trauma care.
