Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland names new chief medical officer

Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland announced that Carol L. Brosgart, M.D., is the hospital’s new chief medical officer and senior vice president. Dr. Brosgart is a widely regarded public health physician with expertise in the areas of HIV/AIDS, chronic viral hepatitis B and C, seasonal and pandemic influenza and healthcare policy. As chief medical officer, she will ensure that the hospital delivers the highest quality of pediatric medical care available and promote the hospital’s commitment of service to the community.
Dr. Brosgart has been an active member of the Bay Area medical community for more than four decades. She joins Children’s Hospital Oakland fresh from a break after retiring from biotech pioneer Gilead Sciences in July 2009. Dr. Brosgart held several positions during her 11-year career at the Foster City biotech firm, including Vice President, Clinical Research and Vice President, Public Health and Policy.
Before Gilead, Dr. Brosgart spent 12 years as the medical director of the East Bay AIDS Center at Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley. Before Alta Bates, Dr. Brosgart had been the medical director of Alameda County’s Central District Health Center in Oakland, where she was one of the first doctors in the United States to treat patients with HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Brosgart is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF). She trained in pediatrics at UCSF and in preventive medicine at the State of California and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health Joint program. She is a member of the clinical faculty at UCSF.
