Queen of the Valley to Help Employees Quite Smoking

Issue: June 2009

Queen of the Valley Medical Center announced it is moving toward becoming a 100% smoke-free campus by March 2010. “This initiative will be an important step toward improving and ensuring the health of our employees, physicians, patients and visitors, and it will also serve as an example for the community that relies on us to safeguard their health,” said Walt Mickens, Queen of the Valley Medical Executive Vice President and Center Chief Operating Officer.

“Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, and that makes it very difficult for even healthcare professionals, who clearly understand the risks, to quit,” Mickens said. “A number of tools and resources will be provided over the next year to help employees who are concerned about their tobacco habits. Our goal is to help as many of our employees as possible to stop smoking while ensuring a healthier, smoke free environment for all of our patients, visitors, employees and physicians.”
